Jim Brown Biography

I was given my first camera, which was a Kodak Brownie 127, when I was five, and have been photographing for most of my life, but I was never very pleased with the results. I decided to take a two-year City & Guilds course, which gave me the technical knowledge I needed to improve my photography. I had some success towards the end of the course when two of my images were published by magazines.

I feel my love of landscape started when I was a boy. We had a view of the Dublin mountains from our back garden. I was fascinated by them.

I spent most of my life living in London, where I worked in building maintenance and ran a small business in this field. After finishing the photography exam, I decided that this was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life, so I decided to turn professional. I had always wanted to move to the countryside, and we moved to Dorset, a county I had got to know over a twenty-year period. Although I started photographing in 35mm I now only use a medium-format camera. I have had my work exhibited in London and published many times. My work is mainly landscape, but I have also covered events such as motocross, beach volleyball and aerial displays among other things.
